Psychology registrar program requirements & competencies
The psychology registrar program is a period of supervised practice that leads to an area of practice endorsement (AoPE) in one of nine approved areas. The exact requirements scale with your qualification (see the tiers above), but every registrar works across the same core components — and PsychTrakka tracks each one against your tier automatically. These figures follow the Psychology Board's Guidelines on area of practice endorsements — always confirm the current version there.
Practice hours
Between 1,500 and 3,000 hours of psychological practice depending on your qualification tier, including a minimum of 176 hours of direct client contact per full-time year.
Supervision
40–80 hours with a principal supervisor endorsed in your area of practice, who provides the majority of supervision. A secondary supervisor may deliver a smaller portion.
Active CPD
40–80 hours of active CPD — learning with a written or oral component, such as reflective writing, case discussion or presenting. Passive attendance alone doesn't count.
Competencies
Evidence of developing the competencies required for your area of practice , tracked across the Psychology Board's competency domains rather than by hours alone.
Progress & endorsement reports
A progress report ( PREA-76 ) around the halfway point, then an application for endorsement ( AECR-76 ) once you've met every requirement. Confirm the current forms with Ahpra.
Using your title
During the program you use the registrar title (e.g. “Clinical Psychology Registrar” ). You may only use the endorsed title once the Board grants your endorsement.
